With pressure mounting on Gov. Eliot Spitzer to resign over a call-girl scandal, investigators said Tuesday he was clearly a repeat customer who spent tens of thousands of dollars — perhaps as much as $80,000 — with the high-priced prostitution service over an extended period of time.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a law enforcement official said Tuesday that Spitzer, in fact, had spent tens of thousands of dollars with the Emperors Club. Another official said the amount could be as high as $80,000. But it was not clear over what period of time that was spent.

Still another law enforcement official said investigators found that during the tryst with Kristen on the night before Valentine's Day, Spitzer used two rooms at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington — one for himself, the other for the prostitute. Sometime around 10 p.m., Spitzer sneaked away from his security detail and made his way to the room where she was waiting, the official said. The three officials spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the case.

Yes, they are still allegations -- not proof. Nevertheless, I am so disheartened by all of this news about New York Governor Eliot Spitizer.
My Mom said she saw a report today of the reaction on the floor the NYSE yesterday when the news flashed across the ticker about Gov. Spitzer: "They cheered." They cheered because, as New York Attorney General, Gov. Spitzer had done so much to bring greedy corporate weasels to justice. Which is a good thing, unless, I suppose, you are a weasel. Then you would cheer.
And I suppose you would cheer about this if you were a Republican, too, because there have been so many disgusting Republican sex scandals -- although nothing much ever seems to happen to them (David Vitter and Larry Craig are still in the Senate; Mark Foley is still on the loose).
This isn’t right. It wasn’t right to countenance the behavior of David Vitter and Larry Craig (and shame on those who did); and it is not right to countenance the behavior of Eliot Spitzer.
My heart, tonight, though, is with Mrs. Spitzer, who gave up a lucrative practice at a sterling New York law firm to support her husband in his political ambitions. How unbelievably unfair all of this is to her -- especially with the coup de grace being delivered on Valentine’s Day.
I remember that Barack Obama halted his campaign on Valentine’s Day to spend the day with his wife and children. What a refreshing breath of fresh air it would be to have a President who actually practiced the love and family values he preaches.
My ex-husband cheated on me. I know the heart-shaving pain that this leaves when you are the cheated-upon wife. I do not know whether this pain would have been lesser or worse had the person with whom the cheating had been done been a prostitute. The whole story makes me sad and angry. I am so sorry for Mrs. Spitzer and their three daughters.
Democrats should not behave this way.
